Oldest website on the Internet

Ever wondered what was the first website since the beginnings of time? Here it is: http://info.cern.ch/

Since then, the number of websites grew dramatically and Hoffman et al. (1995) note that “the Web grew a staggering 1758% in 1994 alone”. The following table comes from their article “Commercial Scenarios for the Web: Opportunities and Challenges” (Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Vol. 1(3)).

However, that’s 16 years ago (!!). What’s the number of websites nowadays? There is no one definite number and different sources offer different answers (yes, even Wikipedia doesn’t know…).

Here’s a few to give you an idea of the immense growth and astonishing size of the Internet:

Look at the 1995 number of hosts and compare with the last bullet point: 256 million hostnames … a hard-to-imagine 1,113,043% increase in 16 years.

While certain sources provide the number of websites, others present the number of hosts and/or domains. If we were looking for a more scientific answer to the question of how many websites there are, a clear distinction would have to be made on the website-hostname-domain issue.

If you find a credible source (and the time to look into it), feel free to correct these numbers 🙂
